The Best Treatments for Ageing Skin

By: Yuliya Culley

There are plenty of perks to getting older. With age comes wisdom, maturity, and knowledge. However, the process of ageing can wreak havoc on our skin. When we are young, our skin is full of collagen and elastin, natural proteins that keep skin healthy, youthful and firm. The older we get, the less able our skin is to produce these proteins. As the built-up reserves deplete, the skin becomes less able to repair itself. This, combined with environmental damage such as that caused by sun exposure, genetics, and the loss of fat in the skin over time can have a negative impact on overall appearance, detracting from the youthful look that many of our patients aim to achieve. Here at Novello Skin, we offer a range of treatments designed to reduce the effects of the ageing process and rejuvenate the skin.

Injectable Treatments

When it comes to halting the ageing process, most will immediately think of anti-wrinkle injections, such as Botox®. The most popular aesthetics treatment worldwide, anti-wrinkle injections work by paralysing the muscles beneath the skin. When we change our facial expressions, or simply perform actions such as smiling, laughing, chewing or frowning, our muscles expand and contract accordingly, and our skin follows suit. Over time, the skin becomes less able to repair itself and remain smooth after this movement. By paralysing the muscles, anti-wrinkle injections help the skin to lie flat and smooth once more, eradicating fine lines and wrinkles.

Dermal fillers are also an incredibly popular aesthetic treatment for restoring lost volume to the face, helping to “plump up” the skin and reverse sagging or the loss of fat over time. Made of hyaluronic acid, or HA, dermal fillers may also help reduce lines and wrinkles by adding volume to the skin and smoothing the area, providing an instant improvement to the appearance of the skin.

Mesotherapy may be used to improve skin hydration and reduce pigmentation, fine lines and wrinkles. During treatment, a blended formula or HA, minerals, amino acids, vitamins, antioxidants, and other important nutrients is injected beneath the surface of the skin, providing a subtle, fresh rejuvenation.

Skin boosters are another HA-based treatment and act as a mid-way point between dermal fillers and mesotherapy. Commonly used on the face, neck, decolletage or hands, skin boosters serve to restore hydration to the skin for a regenerative boost. Skin boosters provide a boost to skin elasticity, allowing for a fresher, natural-looking appearance. What’s more, skin boosters work wonderfully in conjunction with a range of other aesthetic treatments for enhanced results, most commonly microneedling and anti-wrinkle treatments.

Boosting Collagen

More often than not, the ageing of the skin is a result of depleted collagen reserves within the skin. As the skin’s natural repair system, collagen serves to rebuild the skin when damaged or overexerted by the wear and tear of everyday life. As we get older, the skin becomes less able to repair itself, leading to sagging, fine lines, and wrinkles. There are a number of treatments designed to boost the production of collagen and stimulate the skin’s natural healing response to rejuvenate ageing skin, including Platelet Rich Plasma, or PRP. During PRP, blood is drawn from the patient, in the same way as a routine blood test, and the plasma is extracted. This plasma then injected back into the skin, kick-starting the collagen production process. As reserves of collagen rebuild within the body, the skin begins to improve in tone and texture for a more youthful appearance.

As with PRP, microneedling aims to improve the appearance of the skin by boosting collagen production. However, the method by which this is done differs.. With microneedling, also known as collagen induction therapy, a series of very tiny microneedles are moved over the skin, causing many small wounds on the surface of the skin. In healing these small wounds, more collagen is generated by the body, resulting in younger-looking skin.

Skin Regeneration

Chemical peels can aid in rejuvenating the appearance of dull, tired-looking ageing skin, smoothing wrinkles and helping improve poor skin tone and texture. Chemical peels remove the outer, damaged layer of skin, revealing the younger and fresher skin layers beneath. This can help achieve an anti-ageing effect and provide a marked boost to overall skin health.

Like chemical peels, thread lifts also have a remarkable all-over rejuvenative effect of the skin. Using PDO (polydioxanone) threads, a highly safe material used in the surgical field for decades, PDO threads reverse the effects of the ageing process by lifting and tightening the skin, providing structural support and stimulating collagen production as the PDO begins to break down.
